Announcing the Launch of Carey 5.0

The Old and Familiar has been Updated and Improved for the 21^st Century.

Los Angeles, CA - August 24, 2013

After fifty years of excellent service, we are proud to announce the newest edition of the Carey. Old features that you know and depend upon have been retained while improvements have been made to optimize the Carey for the 21^st Century. Now is the time to get re-acquainted with the Carey.

While we have made pain-staking improvements with every model of the Carey over the past fifty years, the new 5.0 series has been developed to excite. Most of the flaws, inconsistencies and system failures have been re-engineered in this new model. Extensive customer feedback, focus group testing and examination of past failures have been incorporated into the making of this new model. This Carey is free of overheating as some earlier models and also the tendency to freeze and become unresponsive. While we continue to deny that the Carey ever actually exploded, we have taken safeguards to insure that this will never happen again.

The operating system of this new Carey has been enhanced for greater interconnectivity. The external packaging has been re-designed with a classic/aged look. While this new model of Carey might lack some of the resilience, stamina and mobility of the earlier models, these features have been traded for greater dependability, an enhanced consumer interface and wifi.

We are confident that you will enjoy this new model over some of the less than successful upgrades such as Carey 1.3-1.5, 2.1-2.3, 2.9, 3.1-3.3 and most of the 4.0 series. The 5.0 series surpasses the 4.0 series in originality and style. This new and improved model retains those features that you most appreciate in the Carey while bringing back some of the idiosyncratic and some might say lovable “quirky” aspects of earlier models.

[DISCLAIMER: C’mon folks it’s a Carey. It’s not a German Heinrich, French Gilles, or a Japanese Tanaka. If that’s what you are expecting, you are looking in the wrong place. This is a good, old reliable American-Made Carey. You can look at a newer American Devon or an Ethan, but why not stick with a name you trust? A Carey.]

Table of Essays

Our now seems vastly different than what came before. The changes of the last century, last decades, even the few years have been more extreme and swifter than any in human history. Navigating through our time is a different challenge than what came before. Our transit is as extensive as the change from the Medieval Era to the Modern. Our challenge is to understand how to live in our new time.

This blog is a collection of writings on living in the 21^st century. It draws from the arts, entertainment, science and popular culture. My primary frame of reference is theatre and Shakespeare. While these essays are for anyone who is asking questions about our time, it is focused on creative artists whose responsibility it is to guide the rest of us how to live in our time. As Shakespeare led us to the Modern, we need guides to get to what's Next.

Thanks and Caveats

Everything I write has been influenced by my teachers, mentors, students and co-workers. The odd conversation has led to a thought that became some big idea. I thank you, it has made my life.

A special thanks to Louise Rosager who encouraged me to get these ideas out of my drawer and put them out into the world.

Everything written here would not be possible without my partner and spouse, Adele Cabot. We have lived, conversed and shared ideas. I can't take credit for anything without sharing it with her.

CAVEATS:

Before I go forward, I need to caution you:

I’m not a scientist or scholar, but an artist, story teller and theatre maker. My goal is to communicate huge ideas that might help us live in our time. My apologies to the learned folk in whatever field I wade into. I’ll probably get things wrong and over generalize, I apologize. If you think I got something grossly wrong, please let me know.

I’m speaking in broad generalities. For every example I give, I can most likely give other examples that contradict what I just said. Just go with it. At the end of the story, you might think it is all hog wash, but along the way try not to get bogged down in the details.

I’m telling an American story with a western civilization root (Judeo-Christian from early civilization, through Europe and onto the Americas after 1492). Other cultures have had similar though different paths. While I'm asking the question how we Americans live in the 21st century, I'm very interested in understanding how other cultures are adapting to this new time. One trajectory of the 21st century is for us to become more alike; to get to the same place together.

The first rule of Clown is:

The Clown will Fail.
